Definition of loads

  • The ultimate load is the maximum load a pole or mast must resist without failure. This is based on the formula of:
    Ultimate Load = Working Load x Factor of Safety.
  • The working load equals 40% of the ultimate load - as per the OHS Act and Eskom specifications and 50% of the ultimate load as per OHTE specifications.
  • The down-line load factor = 30% of transverse load for poles and = 25% of transverse for masts.
